We are engaged in education and research activities in the fields of coastal
engineering and coastal environmental engineering. We are engaged in research
and education in the fields of coastal engineering and coastal environmental
engineering, which can be broadly classified into the following two categories.

Coastal zones are endangered by natural disasters such as tsunamis due to earthquakes and storm surges. Since Japan is frequently hit by typhoon, it is particularly of great necessity to take precautions against a storm surge. Coastal erosion and the resultant loss of land property is another serious problem, which is caused by incidence of high waves during storms. To resolve these matters, firstly, we need to clarify the mechanism of these processes, and based on the understanding of these processes, we need to consider the strategy to protect human life and property from these disasters. We are trying to offer measures for these problems based on field observation, indoor experiment, and numerical simulations, etc.
In the past, estuaries in Japan were the sea of fertility. They have been, however, suffering from pollution and degradation of ecosystems during and after economic growth and resultant development of coastal areas. Similar experiences have also been shared with other developed countries and even with developing countries. Since now is the era of global environment, in which it is almost impossible to predict the effect of some event occurred in another country on our life, it is becoming more important, we believe, to conserve our local environment and to implement the restoration of local material cycling including food supply. We are trying to offer remedies for the issues based on field monitoring and numerical modeling of environmental processes.
