Are you uncertain about what you want to study: civil engineering or architecture?

   It is true that there is a close relation between civil engineering and architecture, But there are some differences between them. For example, we can say that the architect as an artist, while the civil engineer is absolutely an engineer. Civil engineering deals with infrastructure such as roads, airports, disposing facilities and bus terminals. This is quite different from architecture, which deals with the design of structures.

Are you thinking which university you should select for civil engineering?


   For decades, deviation value (difficulty of entrance exam) has been one of the most important measures to choose university. However, we want you to choose your university from multidirectional viewpoints.

Civil Engineering Course in YNU is one of the smallest courses among civil engineering courses in Japan. There is 12 full-time teachers and 33 students in each grade level
according to July 2009 statistics).

During the class, teachers can take care of all the students. Student can contact teachers if they have any problem. You will find studying here is very interesting and you will carry out a fulfilling school life.

Civil engineering course in YNU provides a high-level educational environment for those who want to study civil engineering hard, This is quite different from other universities which have too many students, and don't care about their attendance and have a sense of distance between teachers and students. Students in civil engineering course have many assignments to do, and teachers check the student's work carefully and give them proper advices.

Do you feel worry about the future of civil engineering due to the construction slump?

   Today, we need to review the role of civil engineering. Civil engineering - as the word means - is an engineering which consider both infrastructures and citizens. However, until these days in Japan, civil engineering has considered only the construction of infrastructures and neglected improving the environment. This led to criticisms pointing public work projects.

After the World War II, Japan had to invest in heavily infrastructures for its reconstruction. Highways, Shinkansen lines and sewage systems spread all over Japan. We can get hot water just if we run a faucet, every room is air-conditioned..etc. We can get anything anywhere. Finally, Japan became one of the world's most powerful economies.

On the other hand, after acquiring this affluence, we became aware of many problems. Though heavy investment in infrastructures contributed a lot to economic activities, people raised questions about these investments because of the stagnation in economic activities.

Civil engineering should not lead economic activities but should support them. The mission of civil engineering is to realize the demands for better society, which is exactly an integrated engineering about people, structures, and space. This mission has not changed from Greek and Roman times.

Do You want to participate and find solutions for the Environmental Problems?


   Recently, environmental problems have been greatly resulted from global problems (such as, high-level radioactive waste, greenhouse gas emissions, etc) and problems in our daily life (e.g. poor harvest of Seaweed from the Ariake, noise pollution from the highway near your house or Methane hydrate that has been considered as a valuable energy source and expected to replace petroleum, etc). The role of civil engineering is to find solutions for such problems, where solving environmental problems becomes one of the significant tasks of civil engineering.

Although the theory of mechanics is a major concern, the wide knowledge in chemistry, biology, ecology and advances on computer technologies are important. Our task is to realize environmental issues, classify them, and find out the effective solutions. If you want to work as a leader on solving the environmental issues, you should consider the Course in the Department of Civil Engineering.

I think that civil engineering course is the most plentiful course as you can join different field trips, and visit various construction sites. besides you can improve your knowledge during the lectures and get some hints about the future.

There are not so many students in the civil engineering course. thus this unique atmosphere makes me feel at home. Last year i visited the construction site of railway MM21, It was impressing! I would like to join different field trips!

I think that the most important when you decide to enter the university is what you really want to do. I selected this university because I want to contribute something meaningful with high applicability to the society. The Civil Engineering Course in YNU covers wide areas of engineering, from Hybrid Structure to Urban Development.

It is difficult to decide what you really want, and even to know whether you can do it or no. I recommend you to visit the compos to have a general idea about the difference between civil engineering and architecture in order to be more confident in your choice.

Joining the civil engineering course will open different opportunities in front of you..  It does not mean you will only design a bridge or put a plan for urban transportation, ..etc. You will get surprised to know that you can attend interesting classes and join different field trips !!

I chose this department because i was interested mainly in the water environment field, however joining the civil engineering department enabled me to know more about bridges, urban transportation, and earth engineering. In our department you will have the chance to enjoy improving your knowledge!

I think that this engineering course is very good. I am interested in the research related to roads, bridges, transportation control and costal engineering, as I can join different site visits related to those engineering fields.

As the number of large scale structures such as bridges and roads is increasing; this motivates me to think about different solutions for the environment and people who live in the surrounding areas.

I think that the students who join the civil engineering course are less than the students joining other faculties or departments. This makes it easier for you to interact and to exchange ideas with your classmates and friends, and to do your class work in good environment. I visited the Minatomirai subway site, 21 line of train, and the construction site of tunnel, and I had a clear explanation about the glamorous role which civil engineering plays in this construction work. Even people, who were not so much interested in civil engineering, became interested after this visit.

I think that as civil engineering is related mainly to large scale structures, it also focuses on the environment such as society and people. And this field of study is well covered in YNU. To all students who are interested in this field, let us gain the knowledge and study in YNU!

I think people who do not have a clear idea about civil engineering are so many, even me I did not have. However, I got surprised to find out that studying in this field is so interesting. And I believe that many people felt the same like me. The civil engineering in YNU is able to change your feelings towards the life. Let us build our city together!

After I entered the department, I started to think about what I want to do in the future, and this motivated me to do my best always.  Please think carefully about your future, and put your plans clearly to achieve your dreams.

"Civil engineering" use to have the image of construction site etc, however as soon as you join this field, you will find your self in front of big school and new world you have never seen before. This will encourage you to study more and more.

The classes are interesting more than I can say. I am so glad to study in the field of my interests. The site visit to rail no.21 of Minatomirai subway net, also visiting the construction site of Kenoudo road were very attractive experiences which I would never go through them in normal cases.

University life is very enjoyable, besides, during the classes you will be able to study the technical terms deeply with the expert professors who teach in different areas. Please join our civil engineering department if you are still uncertain about your future!

In this course, you can use high quality equipments and join the classes offered by expert teachers, you can start studying from the basics and go ahead to work on specialized and developed subjects. People who want to become technicians and take great actions and expand their knowledge, please join us in the civil engineering course!

It is just two months since I was enrolled in the civil engineering course, however, I could say that the field of civil engineering is very wide and interesting, more than you can imagine. I would recommend this course strongly.

There is small number of students in the civil engineering course in YNU. Thus the course looks like a class at high school where students can enjoy, interact closely with their professors, and learn easily. I think I was not mistaken choosing the design engineering. I am happy to come!

Many students think that YNU is an old university; however you will get surprised about the latest experimental equipments provided at each laboratory. I think joining the course is quite interesting as the studentsEnumber is small and there are many site visits, etc.

In the course of civil engineering in YNU, we learn that the achievements of big projects, technologies, and nature, etc, are owned to civil engineering. There is small number of students and more number of expert professors in the faculty . I think it is good place for people who really want to study civil engineering. Besides, in the specious compos you can find well equipped accommodations in addition to the fascinating surrounding nature.  Please join our civil engineering course!

When I joined the civil engineering course, I noticed that the students number is small. Also, there are lots of events during the classes where you can visit different sites and do other things. And more than that, you can have the opportunity to talk with your seniors and professors. During your study, you will come to know how you will activate it in the future; therefore you can enjoy learning a lot!

I am glad to study in this department as I could learn directly from great professors. I appreciate being familiar with the professors so much.
During the civil engineering course there are many site visits and field trips. Besides the first year students can join the lectures in different specialties. Also, You can experience what you do not know through reading the valuable text books!

Please notice that there is difference between architecture and civil engineering. And you will make mistake if you think they are close. Many people wonder about what they can do in the civil engineering. In one word we can say that it is the production of civil engineering structures from the barren land. Inspect the land, take measurements to prevent disasters, put plans, build and maintainEtc, all are the scope of civil engineering. In YNU, all teachers are enthusiastic in their fields. If you are interested, please do not be hesitated to take a step in our department!

I had no idea regarding civil engineeringE but it is a necessary filed in our life. The advantage in our faculty is that the number of students is small which enables them to build a strong relationship especially during the exam's period.

It is so fun in our faculty! We have many numbers of excursions. The number of students is limited so that you can discuss with your friend and faculty members. Why do not you join us?

When I was a high school student, I wanted to join the faculty of architecture. However, now, I am so interested in studying civil engineering in our faculty. The reason is that we have many field trip, so we can observe and see real structures. Seeing is believing! I can study hard with high motivation, thanks to these field trips. The field of civil engineering is very huge. You can find your appropriate lab. Also, field trips help you to find out what you want to do. I recommend our department a lot!

In our faculty, we have many filed trips, then you will have good experience. Also, the contents of lectures are so sophisticated.

In the civil engineering school during the bachelor course, the number of students is limited. Therefore, we often have the opportunity to join field trips and to talk with the senior students and even with the faculty members. If you join our faculty, you will find a new vision which you can only recognize in your own eyes.

We have five laboratories which have leading studies in our faculty. In our faculty, we study ground, bridge structure, concrete structure and urban planning. Once you study civil engineering, you will figure out the importance of each field.

Regarding lectures, you should attend them and submit assignments as much as possible. If you follow the rules, you can enjoy your school life.

The field of civil engineering deals with not only bridges and dams, but also urban planning. Why do not we build our city together?

If you are worried whether to chose architecture or civil engineering,  please visit our university once then you can get useful information about both fields.

Civil engineering is very related to our life, as we can have a new view from different angles. In our faculty we can study different majors so you will find your own way even if you do not have clear idea now.

In the civil engineering faculty, you can do what you want to do, which means it is not restricted atmosphere due to the good environment.

I did not have any idea about the civil engineering field before. However, when I entered YNU I came to know about this field and I could feel that civil engineering does not cover only the construction and structure planning, but also studies the environment and society. I definitely recommend our faculty! In our faculty, the number of students is limited so we can talk easily with the seniors and professors. Besides, Yokohama city is very historical and modern balanced city, which makes it easier for us to get accommodated with the study and social atmosphere.

In Yokohama, there are many tourism sites such as Bay Bridge, Yamashita Park, China Town etc., Thus you can visit these sites and get some technical knowledge on fact. It's very interesting! Also, Yokohama city is convenient as can access to Tokyo area in a short time. If you are not sure whether you would chose our university or no, please visit our campus. I am looking forward to meeting you in our university!

I really enjoy my life in YNU more than I imagined. In the civil engineering department, there are various fields so that you can find out what you really want. Besides, the students can get along with each others easily and discuss the technical and subject matters deeply.

The environment of civil engineering department is great as there are not so many students in the classes. Japanese Students also help foreign students allot in many aspects. All people will have the chance to lead a full campus life in our department.

I study about the rifts at the Geotechnical Laboratory. This study is challenging for me and sometimes when I got stuck at some points I can communicate with professors easily and ask their advices. In addition, sometimes we conduct large scale empiric tests with other institutes and general contractor companies. As a student, I can feel challenges in developing technologies which include my idea and I think that it will help me to develop my career in the end. Moreover, we have a chance to visit different engineering fields in Japan and some foreign countries.

I belong to Estuarine and Coastal Engineering Laboratory. In this laboratory, we conduct studies for protecting humans life from hazards and disasters of ocean waves such as tsunamis. Also we do some other studies to improve the water environment in harbor and other costal areas.

Many people were killed in Sumatra due the tsunami disaster caused by a huge earthquake. the main reason is the defect in protection measures against disasters. Being engaged in these studies makes learning and obtaining knowledge more interesting for me.

Forth year (male)

The more you study civil engineering, the larger vision and impression you can have regarding structures, urban planning, disaster prevention, earth engineering and environment. I think that civil engineering course makes us feel how fabulous it is through the various field trips and the unique atmosphere in the class between students and professors.
