Now we accept applications for admission 2016.

The department of civil engineering, Yokohama National University can accept the students in two semester, April or October. Student can admit with Japanese government funded scholarship or their own private funding. Normally , there are four major method of being admitted in the department of civil engineering. They are:
  1. Admission under Special Graduate Program in English (SPE)
  2. Admission with Embassy Recommended Scholarship
  3. Admission with Private funding for International Students
  4. Admission with Private funding for International Students Residing in Japan
  5. Admission under Infrastructure Management Program (IMP)

Necessary procedures to apply for admission for both master's or doctoral degree program are as follows:


1. Admission under department's Special Graduate Program in English (SPE)

Dead Line for Applying OCTOBER 2016 Intake : 25th December 2015!

The department of civil engineering has initiated the concept of Special Graduate Program in English targeting foreign student who are not able to take courses in Japanese. Firstly, the department of civil engineering started admitting the student in the special graduate program in 1999. Each year about six scholarships are allocated to this program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho), Japan for candidate student with excellent academic records. The student who wish to receive department's SPE program recommended scholarship can only apply for October semester.

 

Application Procedure

At the moment of the enrolment (October 2016), the applicant for a doctor's course must hold a master's degree, and the applicant for a master's course a bachelor's degree. For application for October 2016 intake, the following documents must be submitted to the Department by December 25, 2015.

1.

Completed Application Form.

2.

For a Doctor's course, an official transcript showing the applicant's academic performance from both an undergraduate and a master's course.

For a Master's course, an official transcript showing the applicant's academic performance from an undergraduate course.

3. Proof of an applicant's English proficiency.
4.

Two confidential Recommendation Letters in the specific form. Each letter should be in a sealed envelope with signature of the recommender over the flap of envelope and should be sent to the Department of Civil Engineering directly.

5.

Submit other supporting documents mentioned in the application from.

Scholarship

The prestigious Monbukagakusho Scholarship administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Government of Japan is available to the candidate student with excellent academic records. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho), Japan has allocated about six scholarship for the Special Graduate Program in English of the department of civil engineering of Yokohama National University .
The scholarship provides monthly allowance of 147,000 Yen (approximately US$ 1,195) up to 2 years for master's degree, and a round trip air ticket to Japan.
Then scholarship provides monthly allowance of 148,000 Yen (approximately US$ 1,203) up to 3 years for doctoral degree, and a round trip air ticket to Japan.
A certain amount of domestic travel grant is available. Tuition fee (535,800 Yen per year), entrance examination fee (30,000 Yen) and admission fee (282,000 Yen) are exempted.

Both Doctoral degree/Master degree applicant for the Monbukagakusho Scholarship must be:

  • The citizens of the country where Japanese Embassy exists, and

  • The age of the awardees must be 34 or less as of April 1, 2016

  • The applicant must arrive in Japan on last week of September, 2016.


Selection Procedure

Selection will be done by the Department of Civil Engineering based on the submitted documents. The evaluation of applications will be based on the applicant's academic achievements in the earlier degrees and research potential assessed from academic documents, recommendation letters, the field of interest and study plan.

During the selection process, the short listed candidates might be asked for interview which can be e-mail/internet based interviews or other suitable means. The result of selection will be notified to the applicant by the middle of February.

The selected applicants will be asked to fill the more detailed application form and the other documents for official procedure. The lists of candidates selected by the Department of Civil Engineering are sent to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Japan for final approval. The Department of Civil Engineering will announce the final selection result to the selected applicants and make arrangements for successful ones to join Yokohama National University.

2.Admission with Embassy Recommended MEXT Scholarship

MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship are also offered through Japanese Embassy in the applicant's home country on a competitive basis, which are not restricted to the Department of Civil Engineering. Interested person can contact with Japanese Embassy in his/her home country. The preliminary examination is conducted at the local Japanese Embassy. Please contact local embassy in an applicant's home country. The entry term may be April or October depending on the decision made by the Japanese government.

 

Application Procedure

This is general guideline for the admission with embassy recommended MEXT (Monbukagakusho) scholarship. Please refer to the local Japanese embassies in applicants home country for detail.

1. The local Embassies of Japan usually accept the application for the MEXT scholarship around the spring time
2.

The local Japanese Embassy holds preliminary examinations. The preliminary examinations comprises of a document inspection, a written test and an interview. (The Subjects of the written test vary by country and region, and scholarship category). For further information and schedule, please contact the local Japanese Embassies.

3.

The local Japanese embassies conduct their screening on the basis of these test results, and then make their recommendations to MEXT.

4. MEXT confers with the selection committee, deliberates with the host schools, and then makes its final selections. While candidates may express their preferences for specific schools of study, the final decision will be made by MEXT.
5.

Embassy may ask for "Letter of Acceptance" to the successful applicant in preliminary selection fromE. For the letter of Acceptance, an applicant are required to write directly to a professor in the field of study in which he/she wish to enroll. If the professor agrees to be an applicant's academic advisor, he/she will let you know what documents are necessary to carry out the application procedure for obtaining letter of acceptance.  The Letter of Acceptance would be then signed by the prospective supervisor, and sent back by the School of Engineering to the applicant for submission to the local Embassy.

3. Admission with Private Funding for International Students

The International students can admit to both master's and doctoral degree with their own private funding or scholarship sources other than Monbukagakusho (MEXT).

The international Student currently staying outside Japan must select an appropriate professor in the field of study he/she wish to enrol and consult with professor by sending an applicant's curriculum vitae, transcripts and certificates of previous degrees, study plan, and financial recourses. Prospective supervisor will guide the necessary procedure to be followed after evaluating his documents.

 

Application Procedure

Please choose an appropriate professor in the field of study you wish to enroll and consult with professor by sending an applicant's curriculum vitae, transcripts and certificates of previous degrees, study plan, and financial recourses.

2. If the professor agrees to be your academic advisor, he/she will let you know what documents are necessary to carry out the application procedure.

 

Selection Procedure

4. Admission with Private Funding for International Students Residing in Japan

The international students currently residing in Japan can enrol into the master's or doctoral degree course in civil engineering after successfully completing entrance examination (written or interview or both) by school of engineering. For detail, please contact school of engineering. Applicants must have taken the Examination conducted by school of engineering. An Applicants must not possess Japanese citizenship, and must possess either a visa status of "college student", or a visa status that can be changed to "college student" as stipulated by the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act. Applicants must have completed a 16-year course of education for master's degree and 18 years course of education for doctoral degree. For detail, please consult with the office of school of Engineering.

 

Application Procedure

At the moment of the enrolment (October 2010), the applicant for a doctor's course must hold a master's degree, and the applicant for a master's course a bachelor's degree. For application for October 2010 intake, the following documents must be submitted to the Department by December 22, 2009.

1.

Completed Application Form.

2.

For a Doctor's course, an official transcript showing the applicant's academic performance from both an undergraduate and a master's course.

For a Master's course, an official transcript showing the applicant's academic performance from an undergraduate course.

3. Proof of an Applicant's English proficiency (TOEFL or TOEIC Test score).
4.

Submit other supporting documents mentioned in the application from.

5. Attend Entrance exam.

 

Selection Procedure

The selection of the applicant residing in Japan depends on an individual academic examination and other factors (individual academic examination, interview, and a short essay), the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students, and an academic transcript. Monbukagakusho Scholarship after Admission

Monbukagakusho scholarship is also available for the privately financed student currently studying in the department. The fourth-year students expected to advance to regular Master's program student status, or Master's or Doctoral students expected to remain as regular students for one year or longer are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

For further details, candidates should contact the department of civil engineering or International Student centre of Yokohama National University.

Applicants must pass this first stage and then a second stage of screening by MEXT (document screening) before a final decision is made.
