Campus Life

The department of civil engineering has initiated the concept of Special graduate program targeting foreign student who are not able to take courses in Japanese. The special graduate program is specially designed as Doctoral and Master graduate program for foreign student in which the Department of Civil Engineering, Yokohama National University offers courses in English. Full time attendance for three years starting from the winter term (beginning from October) is necessary for a doctor's course, and two years for a master's course. Course work and research work are required. The program is rather research oriented although course work is necessary. Courses are offered in English and all dissertation works including adviser's guidance, progress report, writing and presentation are done in English.

The major fields of study are:

• Structural Engineering

• Estuarine and Coastal Engineering

• Geotechnical Engineering

• Transportation and Urban Engineering

• Concrete Engineering

Student can enrol for this program both Spring (April) and Fall (October) intake. However, the department recommended scholarships are only available for October intake. About six scholarships are allocated to this program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho), Japan for candidate student with excellent academic records. At present 18 graduate students including 15 Doctoral student and 3 Master degree students are pursuing their study under this program.  By the end of September 2009, 25 Doctoral degree and 5 Master degree has been awarded under special graduate program in English.

Doctoral Degree Program

An applicant willing to admit in the doctoral program must have following academic requirements:

• An applicant should have outstanding academic records in undergraduate as well as Master degree, and shows robust research potential

• An applicant should normally possesses a four-year bachelor's degree and a master's degree.  The minimum grade required for admission is an equivalence of 3.5 on the 4-point scale

• Proof of an applicant's English proficiency

Master Degree Program

An applicant willing to admit in the master degree program must have following academic requirements:

• An applicant should have outstanding academic records in undergraduate

• An applicant should normally possesses a four-year bachelor's degree with the minimum grade above average (normally an equivalence of 3.0 on the 4-point scale

• Proof of an applicant's English proficiency
